Tapioca (Sabudhana) Kitchari

A fan favorite + perfect for holy days and yogic fasting

Right now, we’re smack dab in the middle of Navratri 1, so I thought I’d share a Dhyanyoga Center’s fasting favorite— Tapioca (Sudhabana) Kitchari. However, I believe this is fan favorite whether it’s a fasting day or not :). 🤗

What’s Navratri?

In a nutshell, Navratri is an annual festival of devotion to goddess Durga Ma that celebrates her victory over evil. Its deeper significance is in the honoring and celebrating the various forms of Adi Shakti, the embodiment of supreme feminine strength, courage and grace. Specifically, during these nine days, 9 different incarnations of this goddess are celebrated— each one sharing virtues, gifts and blessings specific to her form.

It’s really one of my favorite times of the year!

Ancient yogis of India (and current yogis and yoginis around the world :)), have taken advantage of these high energy and pouring of blessings during these days by strengthening their spiritual practices through extra japa, kirtan, pranayama, longer meditations and yogic fasting.

What’s Yogic Fasting?

Yogic fasting is really what I call yogic feasting :). During Vedic fasting days, you actually can eat quite well. Instead of usual foods, there’s a list of recommended foods to stick to that are light for the body to digest and are non-agitating to the mind— making meditations and the effects of spiritual practices that much deeper!

Now, let’s talk Tapioca Kitchari!

In my book, Tapioca Kitchari is a form of comfort food!

  • It’s light, but filling.

  • The spices are not overly dominate.

  • And, it’s pretty easy to make 😊—but does require a little pre-planning to make since the Tapioca has to be soaked. The good thing is that the soaking process is fast and easy. So, once you have your soaked tapioca, it’s a dish you’ll have ready in less than 30 minutes.

You can eat this kitchari as a complete meal on its own. Or pair it with any of the other following fasting foods:

  • Yogurt & Carrots/ Cucumbers

  • Cottage Cheese & Potato Chips (for a little crunch)

  • Green (Cilantro) Chutney

  • Or, with a side of spinach lightly sautéed w/ ghee and cumin seed.
